Stafford County, Virginia is one of the most historically rich and culturally significant areas in all of North America. George Washington’s famous cherry-tree-chop-down and John Smith’s initial encounter with Pocahontas both took place here in the city by the Potomac. Here are a few must-see historical sites to visit in the city that played such an integral role in shaping America.

George Washington's Boyhood Home at Ferry Farm and Historic Kenmore

This historical site is the stuff of American legend, as it housed our nation’s first president over 250 years ago. We’ve all heard the tale of George Washington and his cherry tree, and this is where that fateful day is said to have transpired. On April 25th, 2015, the site endured a reconstructive overhaul and is now more suited to host educational tours and events. If you wish to experience authentic American nostalgia, book your visit today.

Aquia Church

Construction of this church was completed in 1757. It was built in the form of a Greek cross, with two tiers of windows set in deep, thick walls. The holy house played a major role as a safe-haven for soldiers in the Civil War as many religious services were held here on the eve of battle. An archeological feat in its own right, the Aquia Church is not just a piece of history, but still stands tall and serves as a fully functioning house of God in 2015.

Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania Military Park

This landmark was the site of the gruesome Civil War climax. More than 85,000 men were wounded and 15,000 were killed near this small farm village. Today, the park hosts guided tours and historical education events that serve to enlighten all walks of life on the true costs of war. While you’re here, check out the “Stonewall” Jackson Shrine. You can even stand in the room where the infamous Confederate General passed away.

The Accokeek Furnace Archeological Site

A highly impactful archeological site constructed in 1726, it was originally created on land leased by Augustine Washington (father of George Washington) and then passed on to his son, Lawrence Washington, after Augustine’s death. Much of Stafford’s early construction originates from the site’s rich iron deposits and iron furnace, which now represents the second-oldest eighteenth century blast furnace in Virginia. Remains include evidence of a store, warehouses, mill wheel pit and races, worker’s living quarters, and mine pits.

Potomac Creek Bridge

Eighty feet high and 400 feet long, this monumental feat of construction took two million feet of local lumber to build during the Civil War. Today, only stone blocks stand where the once magnificent bridge was erected by a horde of unskilled infantrymen to serve them during wartime. President Abraham Lincoln once famously referred to the bridge as “Beanpoles and Cornstalks.” Although the formation itself is not intact today, the site serves as a reminder of what our nation fought so hard for, nearly 200 years ago.

The end of the month can be a hazardous time for everyone. All the bills come in; bank fees, rent, car insurance, and who knows what else lurks behind the last day of the month. You find yourself in a position in which you are not able to do everything you were hoping to. No nine-course dinner or an overnight trip to the winery with your spouse. The thing is, though, you have a lot more freedom than you think. Of course the overnight winery is out of the question, as is a weekend golf getaway with the guys, but there are still endless alternatives out there that are yet to be explored.

Central Park Fun Land

With over 20 different rides and attractions, you and your family are guaranteed to find something you enjoy. Some of the attractions include laser tag, go-karts, mini golf, batting cages, mini bowling, rock climbing, and bumper cars. Besides the endless amounts of attractions, Fun Land is home to a massive arcade with over 100 games. The best part about all of this is the price. There are no admission or parking costs; all you pay for are the rides you want to go on.

Government Island County Park

Just like most of Virginia, the Government Island has a deep history behind it. Government Island was used as a stone quarry that contributed to the construction of the U.S. Capitol and the White House. Now the island is a stunning park for the family with a beautiful boardwalk and a scenic heritage trail. The creeks, wetlands, and marshlands provide a variety of habitats for birds and wildlife.

Stafford Civil War Park

The Stafford Civil War Park is a must visit for anyone who is interested in history. The park is made up of 41 acres of hut sites and artillery fortifications. To those who don't know, Virginia was once one of the largest Union encampment sites during the civil war. There are also interpretive maps and signs that bring meaning to the surrounding landscape.

Regal Cinemas 10

Nothing is better than a classic night out at the movies. The best time to go to the movies is on a Tuesday, cheap night. Keep an eye out for special deals, such as $2 candy night. There are always excellent movies here and staying ahead of the entertainment curve is always a blast, so set an evening aside, relax, and enjoy a good movie!

Fredericksburg Ghost Walk

If you're able to gather a group of 10, then you must sign up for a ghost tour of Fredericksburg. Being the home of four major Civil War battles, Fredericksburg has more history and more ghosts than any other city in America. The costume guides conduct a 90 minute candlelight walking tour, filling the evening with folklore and stories of the fallen soldiers.

There are many known benefits to building an indoor garden. Cooking with freshly sprouted herbs can be a delight and applying homegrown aloe to sunburned skin feels even more soothing when you’ve sowed the seeds yourself! Gardening is about more than that, though. It brings a certain tranquility to our lives and satisfies our human nature to nurture. You can learn a lot by starting an indoor garden and there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of raising a healthy family of plants!

Step 1: Seeds

The first step in building any garden is getting a hold of the seeds. Start with some simple seeds; practical herbs such as basil, cilantro or parsley will do the trick. Common houseplants are a great option as well. They’re easy to nurture and add a certain feng shui to your home. Acquire seeds online or at your local farmer’s market!

Step 2: Potting Soil

This is a simple step if you don’t mind getting your hands a bit dirty. Soil can be purchased at any home or garden store. If you like, you may purchase small pots for your plants, but there are more affordable options if you want to get a little creative. Small containers, such as yogurt cups or sliced plastic water bottles, are the perfect size for indoor seed growth. Just be sure to poke holes in the bottom of each container for water filtration.

Step 3: Warmth and Light

Light is only necessary once plants grow above the soil. In the beginning, warmth is all that matters. A windowsill is the ideal spot for proper warmth and light. You can also plant in the basement or garage because they provide great insulation. Just be sure the plants receive sufficient light. There may be some trial and error involved in the initial placement of your plants. You don’t want too much moisture or heat coming in our out. Too much heat or light will result in dry, wilting plants. A lack of heat or light will only produce sparse growth. Fluorescent lights are perfect for vegetables while incandescent light are better for house plants like vines and ferns.

Step 4: Water

Like any living thing, plants require just the right amount of nutrition. Not too much, not too little. Use a spray bottle in order to avoid over-watering. Upon purchasing your seeds, there may be a recommendation for the proper amount of water, but the trick is really just to make sure the soil remains modestly moist. A few sprays of water each day will ensure a healthy plant but missing a day or two wouldn’t be disastrous. Be sure to place some dry newspaper or plastic underneath your pots so you don’t make a mess. Don’t place plants near carpet or cloth if you wish to avoid mold build-up or pest problems.

Step 5: Growth

Enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of your labor and watch your plants come to life! Remember to follow proper maintenance steps to ensure your garden grows and thrives. Maintaining a small indoor garden is a great hobby that spices up any room, so have fun and reap the benefits of your garden!

You break down the last box and throw the it into the pile of cardboard. As the cardboard box lands, a strange feeling overwhelms you. After all of that unpacking, the room still looks empty. So now what? All of the boxes are empty, everything is in its place, but the walls feel empty and the floors look bare. The first thought that runs through your mind is to go to the store, but the big move put you on a tight budget. Price does not make you home a home; personal touch and care is what makes a home. Budget or no budget, your personal touch barely costs a thing. Below are four different ways to bring out your inner creativity.

Shopping

Yes, you're on a budget, but that doesn't mean you can't go and shop. Three of the greatest, yet underrated, stores to shop at are thrift stores, antique stores and Kiji. If you want something unique, something no one else has, then thrift stores and antique stores are the places to be. When you walk into the stores, it’s like a whole new world. There are telephones from the 80’s, newspaper clippings of the Beatles, and never before seen paintings. Items that are usually under $15, and will make your place look unique. Kiji is always a good backup if you can't find what you need.

Crafts

Look around your house. Do you have paint, an empty pop bottle, tape, magazines, a printer, markers, glue, or an empty jar? If you said yes to just two of these, you have enough materials to create your own craft. Crafts are the essence of any home. The best way to find out about crafts is to explore Pinterest. Remember, you can make pretty much anything out of nothing.

Reorganize

Sometimes you don’t need extra items to make your house look full; sometimes you just need to rearrange some things. The best thing to do is to have fun with it. Get acquainted with a different part of your space by moving everything around. Put your TV on the other wall, move the couch closer to the window, or even orient your desk towards the corner. Try new things and have fun.

Plants

Having green in your living space is the easiest way to brighten up your room. Besides bringing life into your room, plants can also be a good source of fresh ingredients, such as mint, basil, and the like. Greenery is easy and cheap to obtain, and it’s a great and affordable way to spruce up your place!
