Summertime is here which means long days full of opportunities. Why not take the chance to learn a little bit more about the area you come from? Stafford, Virginia, is full of rich history that all visitors and residents should be aware of. Numerous trails cover this city that have informational boards along the way. History was made on the very paths that residents and visitors have a chance to walk along. There is an opportunity to learn what the brave people who came before us went through and made sacrifices for. The next time you have a day in the summer where you are ready to learn a little bit while having a fun time, visit the four places below.

  1. Grapes and Grains Trail

    In need of a day away from home? Head to the Grapes and Grains trail to enjoy a “spirited” escape from everyday life. The train includes four wineries, three breweries, and a distillery. The Trail Tickets are only fifteen dollars, and they never expire. Included in the ticket is a collectable stemless tasting glass and VIP tours of each facility along with discounts in the gift shops at the trail stops. All off the Grapes and Grains Trail stops are located off Interstate 95 which allows for easy accessibility for a day of fun and relaxation.

     

  2. Government Island

    A historical nature preserve and archaeological site, Government Island is a 18th and 19th century quarry site that lies across seventeen acres. It is an ideal place for observing aquatic and native plants, birds, and other wildlife. The Island’s many creeks, wetlands, and marsh areas provide a variety of habitats for the wildlife. There is also a 1.5 mile trail that includes interpretive signs to help viewers depict it’s rich, significant history. On the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register, Government Island or “America’s Historic Stone Quarry” is a scenic heritage trail.

     

  3. Aquia Landing Park

    A day of fun and relaxation is waiting for you at Aquia Landing Park. Open year round, this landing provides nearly a quarter-mile of recreational beach on the Potomac River. It is a natural setting surrounded by wooded and marshy areas located at the eastern edge of Stafford County. There are many features available for people to use including sand volleyball, rentable pavilions, concession stands, and much more. It is a great place to bring the whole family for some time outdoors along the beach.

     

  4. Stafford Civil War Park

    As the site of the 1863 winter encampments and fortifications of the Union Army’s 11th Corps, Stafford Civil War Park opened in April 2013. At this site over 3,500 soldiers died during this winter that most soldiers refer to as their “Valley Forge”. The park is situated on forty-one acres where visitors can see and learn about Civil War history. A winter hut site remains, a corduroy road, a late 18th and 19th century quarry, and remnants of the 1660s Potomac Church Road bed still remain to be viewed by visitors. There are easily accessible trails, and admission is free so take the opportunity to learn about the past.
